Jennifer Lawrence’s Happy Place Is a Tent Filled With Kardashians

The actress reveals the details of her cheery refuge on the set of her new dark thriller, ‘Mother!,’ in the September issue of Vogue.

Jennifer Lawrence, America’s unfiltered, Kentucky-bred sweetheart, was photographed in a very American setting (New York Harbor, Statue of Liberty visible in the background) by a very famous American photographer (Annie Leibovitz) wearing an iconic American designer (Ralph Lauren) for what feels like pointedly patriotic September Issue cover of American Vogue.

Though she’s the face of Dior, the 26-year-old isn’t necessarily know as a fashion plate in the same way that contemporaries like Zendaya or Bella Hadid are often described, so she’s an interesting choice for the issue dedicated to fashion, which has featured mostly models on the past few September covers. Last year, Vogue and company chose Kendall Jenner and Gucci for the September cover, a seemingly obvious albeit boring choice — the hottest Insta girl and the hottest brand on the market.

Lawrence, notably, doesn’t have social media herself; however she always seems to trend anytime she hits a red carpet or gives an interview, lauded for her swearing and tripping and generally being “so relatable!”

In the accompanying cover story by Jason Gay, the writer and his subject sip Kentucky Bourbon, discuss the perilous extraction of crystals from her Hollywood Hills home as well as some fun tidbits from her upcoming thriller, Mother!, written and directed by Lawrence’s boyfriend of a year, Darren Aronofsky, which is due out Sept. 15. (She tells Gay of her relationship, “We had energy…. I had energy for him. I don’t know how he felt about me,” adding, “I’ve been in relationships before where I am just confused. And I’m never confused with him.”)

There was the time she dislocated a rib after hyperventilating too intensely on set (your regular, run-of-the mill occupational hazards) and the fact that during the filming of the dark thriller, the crew set up a “happy place” for Lawrence to escape from the intensity of the set. Like most “happy places,” Lawrence’s was filled with gumballs and Kardashians. Not the actual Kardashians per se, but photographs of the famous fam and clips of their reality show playing on a loop. Just when we thought she couldn’t get any more relatable.
